The Flash Helmet – A Photographer’s Quest for Perfect Light
September 10, 2009 by Juergen Specht · 11 Comments
Back in 2002, there was no Strobist or a small flash culture, but I was already ahead of the times and created this little conception. To test it out, I’ve made an appointment with my friend June in a park and let her test it.

There you go, the Flash Helmet!

As Strobist discovered it, he titled his blog post “Straddling the Line Between Genius and Insanity“, but hey, it works! ;-)

The first test subject…

… and the results speak for themselves!

More subjects…

… and we discovered an unexpected side effect!

Today I would probably use CLS, but back in 2002 this was not invented, so I used a TTL cable to control the flash.
The construction was basically self-made out of some old spare parts, here are some better photos to explain the construction.

Genius!
this thing will be so popular
Haha, that is awesome. I think the pics look great!
i can say it’s funny but its pretty damn cool..your a genius
This is the best thing I’ve ever seen…well, best thing this year anyway! :)
Needs to be modded to be rain-proof & then that will be killer !
Hackability !
You could link it up to a water sprinkle, to give you a cool shower in the hot Japanese summer!
Am I correct to infer that wearing and using a helmet-mounted strobe+umbrella causes all of your subjects to appear Asian? This is a very surprising effect.
I was just wondering, does it cause a shadlow from the helmet itself being in the path of the “flashback”? Otherwise looks excellent. I like it a lot
oops make that shadow, not shadlow
