My latest show: Keitaigirls

Keitaigirls

I just finished my latest show “Keitaigirls” in the Uplink Factory in Shibuya, Tokyo. Every 2 months about 20 photographers present their work there in front of a great audience (it’s always packed!) and I decided to show my Keitaigirls. To be perfectly honest, I am not a great presenter, I kinda get too nervous in front of an audience and forget what I wanted to say…after its over I always remember the witty puns again, but then its too late. Nonetheless some people liked my show.

So what are the Keitaigirls? Maybe I let others explain it, the famous blog “Fleshbot” once wrote:

Through his “Keitai Girls” series of pretty models with cell phones (often nude, and sometimes wearing things like wigs, bondage gear, spaghetti, body paint, or clown makeup as a bonus), German photographer Juergen Specht may have done the next to impossible: singelehandedly cornered the market on a whole new fetish. “It all started as a joke … This developed its own dynamic and here is the first part of my Keitai Girls.” And he did it in Japan, no less, home of just about every existing kink you can think of. We’re impressed.

The longer story goes like this: 10 years ago one of my models got a call in the middle of a photo shooting. It took rather long and I was standing there with my camera in my hand…so I just decided to take pictures while she used her Keitai (if you still don’t know what a Keitai is – it’s the Japanese word for mobile phone).

After this first time, I started in most of my shootings also to take a picture of the model and a Keitai. Now – 10 years later – its hard to stop, its almost like a ritual for me and models who worked with me before even remind me to take the Keitai shot. While preparing for the show, I found more than 150 pictures of girls with a Keitai, 117 of them are now (re-)published. However, if you also count my street portraits and other pictures I took of girls holding a Keitai, I counted more than 600 (!) pictures in my entire Keitaigirls series…

It is really a series in progress and one day this might become a book.

Build in the early 1970s and not in use for almost 20 years, this round, once pink mini-building is now left to rot in somebodies garden somewhere in an undisclosed location not too far from Tokyo.

Fish on Ice

I would never get the idea to freeze fish just for the fun of it, but somebody already did: The Ice Aquarium in Kesennuma, Japan is part of the local fish market and some of the freshly fished fish (try to say this fast!) ends up in this aquarium stored at -20 degrees Celsius. Brrr.

The second death of the dinosaurs

The Kyouryu Park (Dinosaur Park) in Kisarazu, Chiba Prefecture in Japan, was one of the projects which relied on the short living Dinosaur trend and the expected visitors coming from Tokyo using the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, a tunnel/bridge combination crossing Tokyo Bay. However, using the Aqua-Line used to be very expensive, so it never caught on and lots of businesses on the Chiba side never saw an increase of visitors and had to shut down their operations.

These photos are taken at the day of the closure of the Dinosaur Park, but fortunately they could sell most of the Dinosaurs to companies, individuals and the Teine Olympia amusement park in Sapporo, Hokkaido.

A hairy little secret

December 16, 2009 by Juergen Specht · Leave a Comment

Whenever I take a taxi in Tokyo, I browse through the little advertisement flyers they have to offer…they are always somewhat special. This one I kept, its just too good to throw away.

A hairy little secret

The text on top says “Medical Laser Hair Removal” and the prices in green show how much it costs to remove hair from the individual body parts, while the violet speech bubbles compare it to the prices of “expensive underwear” (40,000yen), an “expensive watch” (630,000yen) and an “expensive handbag” (110,000yen).

I wonder if I just learned something?

The Bee Paradise

I just love cheesy tourist attractions, over the years I must have seen and photographed hundreds of them all over Japan.

This particular place is called Bee Paradise and is located near Nagano and shows more than 600 different exhibits…all made out of bee hives.

The Bee Paradise

There is no other place like this on earth and even the Guiness Book of Records acknowledged the uniqueness of a 4 meter tall Mt.Fuji made out of 160 bee hives.

This particular exhibit was also submitted to the Guiness Book of Records, it’s 6.5 meter long, made from 20 individual bee hives.
